Skylar Hales RHP Texas (AA)

(Evaluation based on 1-inning 8/18 appearance against AA Springfield)

Body / Delivery / Athleticism: Every bit of his listed 6’ 4” with broad shoulders and a strong, mature frame. Solid mover down the mound with a short, deceptive arm action into a low 3/4 slot—variable rotational effort to his finish.

FB | 60/60: Worked at 96-99 with solid tailing life. Can have approach angle-driven effectiveness at the top of the zone from his low slot, but shape lends itself to hard contact when located below the upper third.

SL | 55/60: Sweeper shape at 86-89, pairs well with his running FB. Its combination of above-average horizontal length and quality velocity should allow it to neutralize righties and play as plus.

CH | 35/45: Little used in this outing, thrown at 84-86 with fair sink and fade. Difficult to confidently assess given limited look but presently projecting it to avg- value. Will need to improve to boost his effectiveness against LHH.

Command | 30/45: Carrying a 2.70 walk rate as a 22-year-old at AA—left his FB over the plate too often in this outing, yielding hard contact and emphasizing the need for him to locate it at the top of the zone. Strike-throwing ability will easily suffice in a relief role, but ultimate impact will be determined by how much touch he can eventually actualize.

Overall | Role: 40+: Mid-leverage multi-inning relief projection driven by his quality FB/SL combination and solid strike-throwing ability. Youth, developing feel for his CH, and potential to exceed current command grade put higher-leverage upper-end outcomes in play. Primary risks to achieving his projected value are his FB’s in-zone vulnerability and a potentially significant platoon disadvantage against lefty bats.
