(Evaluation based on 8/18 start against AA Springfield | Pitch and Role Grades Below)
Body: Relatively narrow frame with long arms. Limited visible strength, body and delivery create hesitation concerning ability to handle a starter’s workload across a full ML season.
Athleticism: Plus rotational athlete with fluid, twitchy movements. Effort to his delivery pushes the limits of his body control.
Delivery: Stretch-only, significant rotational effort throughout with all his momentum pulling him to the glove-side on finish. Arm timing varies, frequently late which damages FB command. Big arm speed with an offline arm-action into a generally 3/4 slot—but significant variation here, often raising his release point on the SL. Extremely quick worker.
FB | 65/70: Big time velocity at 96-100, working with both a 4-seamer and sinker. Velocity alone allows him to generate swing and miss, but both shapes diminish this ability—limited life to the 4-seam, while the 2-seam features solid run and sink but is geared more towards weak contact. Both varieties can be exposed when left over the plate.
SL | 50/65: Significant polish required, but at peak shows wipeout depth with impactful velocity at 85-91. Frequently flattened out in this outing, and too often dramatically raised his slot, making it easier for batters to recognize out of his hand. If he can make strides to its consistency, will play as a plus-plus swing-and-miss offering down and below the zone.
CH | 40/50: Deployed very infrequently at 86-88, but flashed solid tailing action with maintained arm-speed. Should have some effectiveness against hitters geared up for his elite FB/SL combination.
CMD | 25/40: Limited FB control, most frequently losing it up and to the arm-side. Lacks the secondary feel necessary to locate his SL or CH with any consistency. Athleticism drives hope he can develop playable ML control, but hard to see him achieving anything beyond below average touch within the zone.
Overall | Role 5: Profiles as a high-leverage piece out of the pen able to work multiple innings in impactful situations. Electricity of his arsenal creates significant upside if he can develop the command necessary to stick in the rotation, with middle-of-the-rotation or better outcomes in play. That said, believe the inherent limitations of his delivery and size will prevent him from developing the command and durability required to actualize this upside.
