Dalton Rushing C Los Angeles Dodgers (AA)

(Notes based on 7/25 and 7/28 games against AA Frisco)

Body: Listed at 6’ 1” — thick, mature build with a strong lower 1/2.

Athleticism: Relatively fluid, controlled movements despite his size.

Bat: Above-average bat speed with a compact path geared for lift. Quality pitch recognition with strong, adjustable hands that allow him to square off-speed offerings. Real raw power generated by his strength / bat speed combo, actualizes this to the pull side in-game when he’s able to turn on balls on the inner 1/2 . Traits at the plate are buoyed by his advanced approach, with combination of selectivity within the zone and discipline on pitches outside the zone

Arm / Defense / Power: Solid transfer with average arm strength, but fairly unrefined behind the plate beyond this. Below-average receiver as a result of stiffer hands that reduce the subtlety to his framing.  Blocking also needs work, but as he’s still relatively new to the position have some hope for improvement here given inherent athletic traits. Fringe runner with fairly impressive mobility for his size that combined with his arm strength could allow him to profile in LF for added versatility.

Summary: Hesitant to assign specific trait and role grades given relatively brief look and desire for more looks at the bat. That said, believe his quality on-base / power combination will carry him to a quality everyday role. This may be in more of a combination C/1B/LF role, as his defense behind the plate will be sufficient but not of the variety where you’d prefer him to be your primary guy there if better options are available. This will put more pressure on his bat than the typical catcher, but believe he should be able to meet this challenge. Ultimate upside will depend on his hit tool and defensive development — need to see more to fully assess this.
