(Evaluation based on 7/28 appearance against AA Tulsa)
Body: Relatively short (listed at 6’ 0”) with an athletic build and strong lower 1/2. Potential to add limited strength to upper body but fairly mature.
Athleticism: Quality athlete with advanced feel for his body and loose, fluid movements.
Delivery: Loose, online arm action into a 3/4 slot with good arm speed. Generally has fluid, easy movements down the mound — rotational effort varied, however, at times causing the timing of his operation to become out of sync. Lost his control when this occurred, but athleticism and generally clean movements should allow him to overcome this with polish. Extends well for his size.
FB | 60/65: Thrown at 94-97 with quality life despite its relatively generic spin orientation. Good ride from a low release height that creates a flat vertical approach angle. Consistent swing-and-miss when he keeps it up in the zone.
CH | 45/60: Worked at 86-90, maintained his arm speed and flashed plus 2-plane action that should neutralize lefty bats. Shortens up occasionally, but has decent feel for his age and with improved consistency will miss bats down and below the zone.
SL | 40/55: Downer shape at 83-86, showing quality snap with above average vertical length at peak. Flattens out at times but executes the pitch with relative consistency, and as it solidifies should be a second swing-and-miss secondary. Conservatively grading it to above average, but real chance to be plus or better as he tweaks the movement profile—easy to believe he does this given his present feel.
CMD | 30/55: Filled the zone in the first of his 2.2 IP, but lost it after that. That said, had spurts of real touch within the zone even as he battled through a tough night. Given his youth, consistently low walk rates, delivery, and overall athleticism, making an aggressive bet that he provides above-average ML command at peak.
Overall | Role 55: 22-year-old righty showing all the foundational traits necessary to profile as a #3/4 big league starter. Standout fastball with multiple swing-and-miss secondary offerings and the delivery / athleticism combination requisite to achieve quality ML command. Additionally, easy to see him adding additional effective secondary offerings given his standout hand feel. Inherent risk as a smaller starter with a high-octane arsenal, but upside as a true #3 or better given his wide base of opportunities for positive variance.
