(Evaluation based on 7/25 appearance against AA Frisco)
Body: Imposing look on the mound—tall with a large, muscular build. Only 22, but mostly filled-out.
Delivery: Works from the stretch, generates quality down-mound extension with some controlled effort to his finish. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with a stiffer, offline arm action that carries potential implications for his command projection.
Athleticism: Able to control his body well for his size with the explosiveness requisite to generate elite velocity. Despite this, movements are somewhat stiff which could impede ultimate command outcome.
FB | 80/80: Thrown at 99-102 (primarily sitting 101-102), some carry but in-zone effectiveness may be slightly limited by his generic approach angle. That said, wouldn’t overthink this too much as the velocity is top-of-the-scale and combined with his extension should play as an elite offering.
SL | 50/65: Elite velocity at 92-94. Can flatten out at times, but at its best shows biting downward action with solid length. Combination of velocity and movement should make it a plus or better offering with improved consistency.
CB | 45/50: 2-plane action at 87-90, fair shape with some depth and glove-side movement. Serves a purpose in his arsenal as a relatively lower velo-band to keep hitters off-balance.
Command | 35/45: Surprisingly advanced ability to fill the zone given his age and the potency of his arsenal. As indicated earlier, concerned that his arm action and lack of fluidity will hinder his touch within the zone. Creates hesitation to project above fringe command, but should have quality ML strike-throwing ability.
Summary: Despite only a 1-inning look, his elite combination of stuff and relative polish as a recently-turned 22-year-old in AA creates comfortable projection as a plus ML setup man able to generate high-leverage outs. Upside as an elite-level reliever with multiple paths to achieve this — his command could become a weapon, his slider could take an additional step forward, or he could develop a second plus secondary. Would also consider working him in a multi-inning role to provide additional value given his physicality and strike-throwing ability. Risk inherent to the profile (missed the 2023 season post-Tommy John), but checks all the boxes you could hope for in a relief-only prospect. Slider consistency away from being ready to pitch leverage ML innings.
