Caleb Roberts C/OF Arizona (AA)

Caleb Roberts C/OF Arizona (AA)

Notes from 6/13 matchup against AA Frisco. General notes, not assigning individual trait grades given brief look / lack of conviction.

Body: Athletic look with fairly broad shoulders, visually appears capable of strength gains but seems unlikely in his age-24 season.

Athleticism: Quality athlete with fluid movements.

Bat: Loose, fluid swing with some innate feel for barrel. Above average bat speed that allows him to drive balls on the inner half, but has an extremely pull-oriented approach with a path that quickly exits the zone — likely to be exposed on pitches away from him which will hinder hit tool to an extent. Swing geared for some loft and should be able to actualize much of his solid raw power in games.

Defense/Arm: Total project behind the plate. Lack of experience and innate athletic traits drive hope this will improve, but long road ahead to develop the skills necessary to consistently catch in the big leagues. Very green as a receiver and blocker, hands appear soft enough to develop sufficient ability to frame just not there yet. Below average arm strength will prove a further hindrance. If he can achieve playable defense, versatility to play OF and C would offer unique value. Hard to see this happening any time soon, however.

Run: Didn’t get a run time but gets down the line fairly well and see as at least a fringe-average runner.

Summary: Former primary outfielder getting his first run as a full-time catcher. Intriguing traits at the plate if he can develop an ability to catch — some limitations but chance for fringe hit and game-power combination. If the defense behind the plate never actualizes, won’t have enough impact to provide ML value as a corner outfielder. If it does, could carve out a niche as a versatile bench bat able to provide a unique form of depth. Just difficult to see him doing this given present defensive look.
