Dax Whitney HS RHP 2024

(Note: Video-only evaluation based on 5/26 PG Event outing.)

Body/Delivery/Athleticism: Uber-athletic, projectable Idaho righty with high-octane arsenal. Twitchy, explosive, and fluid movements with a tall, lean build enabling room to add impactful strength throughout. Quality arm speed with a short, deceptive arm action into a vertical slot — appears to release from a relatively low height despite this. Generates solid extension down the mound, some effort with present head whack and loss of balance to glove side on finish. That said, plus athleticism generally overcomes current delivery deficiencies, allowing him to execute with fair consistency.

Pitch Mix: FB sat 92-94 T95 in his first inning of work, settling in the 90-92 range after this. Quality carry through the zone, creating consistent S/M up — should only improve in potency as he builds strength. Works a two-plane SL at 81-84 in the 2500-2800 RPM range,  features tight two-plane break that when executed shows real bite with the potential for plus effectiveness. Second breaking ball is an 11/5 curveball at 73-78, plus depth at best with similar spin rates to the SL — plays off his FB shape and will only become more effective if its velocity improves commensurate with his strength gains. CH at 80-81, infrequently used with lack of consistency but flashed fair fade — conservatively projected to avg- value but could easily excede this.

Command: Below average control at present. Able to keep his FB up and breakers down and below the zone when he syncs up his delivery, but this is inconsistent. Aggressively betting athleticism and refinements allow him to achieve average command. Octane to arsenal may allow him to play as an inefficient starter even if command never fully reaches this.

Summary: Arrow-up prospect with elite FB projection and opportunity for multiple plus breaking balls. HS RHP with lack of extended track record carries extreme base rate risk, but type of profile that could explode as he builds strength. Present look could fit in the early-mid second round. Would likely avoid at this spot due to inherent variance, but certainly worthy of a selection here. Middle-of-the-rotation outcomes in play, could also see as an elite reliever if CMD prevents him from sticking in a bulk role.
