Dane Acker RHP Texas (AA)

(Evaluation based on 5/10 start against AA San Antonio | Pitch and Role Grades Below)

Body:  Tall with filled-out frame. Thicker lower 1/2 with little to no remaining physical projection.

Athleticism: Below average athlete with slow-twitch movements and limited explosiveness. Fair body control.

Delivery: Works from the windup with a short, online arm action into a close to vertical release point. Fairly low effort, simple delivery with average extension — leg swings open on landing which creates a loss of balance to glove side. Lack of athleticism reduces ability to compensate for this which damages command despite relative ease of delivery.

FB: Works at 91-95 T96 with axis-driven carry. Able to generate swings and misses and pop-ups at the top of the zone due to vertical orientation. That said, low-spin rate limits its life, and the pitch comes from a high release point that severely reduces its effectiveness when located anywhere else.

CH: Thrown at 86-89, flashed quality arm-side fade on occasion, but relatively poor feel for the pitch. Inconsistent shape and frequently noncompetitive, leaving it up and to his arm side. See it having average utility at peak.

CB: Works at 78-81 with predominantly vertical shape that pairs well his FB’s profile. Frequent tendency to roll with lack of sharpness, but at its best flashes average depth and bite. Aggressively projecting it to average utility, betting on increased consistency that is augmented by its complementary movement profile.

CUT: Very limited glove-side break with slight downward action at 84-88. Solid feel for the pitch, but limited value besides as a different shape for hitters to consider. Potential utility as a way of limiting hard contact against same-handed bats.

Command: Showed ability to keep the FB at the top of the zone early on, but significantly waned over the course of his outing, rendering his entire arsenal ineffective. See him developing general zone control at maturity, but lacks athleticism to have the touch and feel necessary for average command outcomes. Relatively poor feel for secondaries limits his ability to locate them.

Summary: Profiles as an emergency starter or long-man called up to relieve a depleted bullpen. Don’t see him having a home on a deep 40-man roster, but could potentially provide length in a pinch for below-average clubs. Solid depth to his arsenal, but lack of a swing-and-miss pitch combined with just fair control and limited secondary consistency hinder projection. Upper-end outcome as a #5 starter or solid multi-inning reliever with significant improvements to command or quality of secondaries.
