Dylan Volantis HS LHP 2024

(Note: Video-only evaluation)

Good-bodied California lefty with a standout breaking ball. Tall with wide shoulders, room to add strength (particularly to upper half). Just an okay on-mound athlete with some stiffness and limited explosiveness. Offline arm action lacking deception, comes over the top with fair effort to his delivery and some loss of balance to glove side.

FB 88-92, shape is mediocre with some carry and run but nothing standout. High release point mitigates any approach angle value at the top of the zone, see some potential value in working towards a more sinker-like profile. Solid arm speed and will definitely tick up as he matures. SL 75-78, relatively advanced feel with slurvy shape and big depth. Some concern it will be easy to pick up out of the hand, but its clearly his best secondary and has a chance to be plus in the future. CH is infrequently used but he’s able to maintain his arm speed and kill spin, very limited shape at present but willing to bet it gets to average.

Above average control for age, some concern with delivery and athleticism but see enough to project to average ML command.

Overall, has the traits to profile as a back-end ML starter. Committed to USC and could see his draft stock improve significantly with anticipated velocity improvement, command projection solidification, and third pitch development. Third or fourth round-type profile at present, likely to have fairly high bonus ask and would be willing to pass on him and let him go to school to see if he can make the requisite improvements.

FB 30/50 | SL 40/60 | CH 30/50 | CMD 25/50

Assessed Bonus Value: $700,000
